| 内容記述 | Iwami Dialect, situated in the western part of Shimane Prefecture, bears similarity to adjoining dialectal areas such as northwestern Hiroshima and Japan Sea coastal region of Yamaguchi, while exhibiting many distinguishable characters that differentiate it from the eastern adjoining Izumo Dialect. Regarding the /ai/ > /aː/ derivation, Iwami Dialect shares features with Izumo Dialect in forms like komaː ‘small’ derived from komai, but such derivations cannot be seen in Hoki and Inaba Dialects situated to the east of Izumo Dialect. However, sumaː ‘had better not do’ in Iwami Dialect, derived from simai in Standard Japanese, is quite similar to semaː in Hoki Dialect, while the intervening Izumo Area shows a different form. This pattern cannot be seen in the areas adjoining Iwami Dialect: Izumo, Hiroshima, or Yamaguchi. The honorific forms, -nsaru (declarative) and -nsai (imperative) are used in Iwami Dialect. Inaba Dialect is the only other dialect with parallel usages of -nsaru and -nsai. In contrast, Hiroshima Dialect, although adjoining Iwami Dialect, has the imperative -nsai only. Regarding verb endings expressing reasons (keː and ken), which pervade the whole Chugoku Region, keː-only areas are Iwami and central and eastern Tottori (eastern Hoki and Inaba), as well as Bingo, situated in the eastern part of Hiroshima. The ken-only area is Izumo, which lies between Iwami and central and eastern Tottori. So in both Iwami and central and eastern Tottori, keː is only used in common. In Aki Dialect, in the western part of Hiroshima and adjoining Iwami, there is parallel usage of keː and ken. In this respect, there may not be a strong relationship between Iwami and Aki Dialect in keː/ken usage, despite their geographical proximity. In conclusion, I suggest that Iwami Dialect has a stronger phonological relationship with Inaba Dialect( and also eastern Hoki) than with adjoining dialects such as Hiroshima and Yamaguchi. |
