The area was later called the Danelaw area, which eventually gave birth to a unique society mixed with traditional English and Scandinavian customs. This Anglo-Scandinavian society was, from the eyes of the southern English people, very different from their own. Nonetheless, the Danelaw area was far from homogenous in terms of social natures and systems, religions and speech due to varying degrees of cultural intermingling and the number of new settlers.
